"It's been doing well the last few years," says Superex Vice President Michael Gisser about Canada's economic prosperity. The two sides agreed to end their partnership with one year left on the contract.  &lt;br /&gt;"The board just felt that they needed a different focus," said Walter Schatz, executive directory of SAAGNY, in an exclusive interview with Counselor this afternoon. "The board wants to focus on a show and event that they can control more of. The show has become smaller and what has happened is that the involvement of our volunteers was reduced to almost nonexistent and our organization is very much volunteer driven. There wasn't a role for them in that structure and we needed that focus back."&lt;br /&gt;The most recent Promotions East show, held earlier this month in Atlantic City, attracted 3,500 attendees, which was down 17% from last year's 4,200 attendees. While Schatz says that SAAGNY will continue as a PPAI affiliate, the feel of the Promotions East show changed too much for members once PPAI became involved and took control of everything from marketing and advertising to sponsorships, group sales and logistics.&lt;br /&gt;"It was a different experience for our folks and our attendees and our exhibitors, than we had in the past," says Schatz, whose own contract with SAAGNY runs until July 2009. "PPAI is very much staff driven with very little volunteer participation, while SAAGNY is very much volunteer driven with strong participation and a much more even distribution of responsibility," he says. "We just felt that volunteer commitment to the future of the show was critical."&lt;br /&gt;In a statement, Steve Slagle, president and CEO of PPAI, said that he believes the Promotions East show is now in good enough shape for SAAGNY to operate it on its own. "PPAI and SAAGNY have put programs and systems in place that will allow SAAGNY to move forward on its own in delivering a positive show experience," he said. And the hefty cost of filling up the tank has distributors, many of which rely heavily on their cars to make sales calls, feeling the pinch. "My area is very spread out," says Leta Roberts, president of Sales &amp;amp; Marketing Strategies (asi/317105). "If I had an area in downtown Chicago, I could do okay, but I'm in a dispersed area. I've got to head 50 miles north and 50 miles west…You have to make sales calls, but I make them on the minimum."           &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Roberts is not alone. In fact, 86% of business owners recently surveyed by Discover Small Business Watch said that gas prices have had a negative impact on their businesses. Three quarters said petroleum costs were hurting their profitability. Further, more than half of survey respondents (55%) rated the economy as poor and 44% said they experienced cash flow issues in March. "Gas is a significant operating cost. It's also difficult to pass along the expense to customers," says Sastry Rachakonda, director of Discover's business credit card. "If gas prices continue to climb, businesses may have to be more creative about how they use fuel and what alternatives they have."One way distributors are conserving gas is by planning a circuit of in-person sales calls. "I plan several meetings in the same region in one day," says Marcus Cohen, salesperson for The Sunshine Group (asi/339525). "I combine errands and meetings and try to do things that don't waste as much gas." Cohen also says that he thinks the high cost of gas is beginning to affect buyers of promotional products. The percentage translates to an increase of $136 million compared with last year's numbers, based on the 2007 industry revenue number of $19.6 billion and the Counselor State of the Industry estimate that 20.4% of sales occur in the first quarter. The survey, though, also reports that distributors are becoming a bit more pessimistic about the market right now. The number of distributors who reported quarterly sales increases fell from 52% in fourth quarter 2007 to 47% in the first quarter of 2008. In fact, Q1 2008 marked the third consecutive quarterly decline in the number of distributors reporting year-over-year sales increases. However, 59% of distributors said that they expect to increase their overall sales in 2008 vs. 2007.&lt;br /&gt;Frank Seidelmann, owner of New Jersey-based Sherri Advertising (asi/325490) is one distributor that reported slow sales in Q1 2008: "My customers are insurance agents and service people that have to use their vehicles to do business and the economy is hitting them and in turn it's hitting us," he said. On the other side of the coin is North Carolina-based The Solutions! Group (asi/329812), which does much of its business with incentive programs and company stores. "We are seeing tremendous growth in sales," says President Kathleen Simon. "Right now we are seeing an increase in our first quarter of 14.18%. We are very, very pleased and see nothing but bright things on the horizon."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chuck Fandos, president of Top 40 distributor Gateway CDI (asi/202515), thinks the 3.4% increase is an accurate reflection of industry sales – and almost exactly matches his company's own 1st quarter figures. But he also understands why some distributors would be surprised by the figure. "I would call the market a little uncertain right now," he says. "There's a lot of activity but not a lot of decision-making going on right now. But I think last year was a tremendous year and the fact that Gateway is up 3% is pretty good because we were up 15% last year. The suppliers in our industry that I've been talking to say their business is strong. Here are some tips we found may help you at the show.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;---Simon Tilley&lt;br /&gt;My first tip would be to plan thoroughly.&lt;br /&gt;· Plan your transport to the show to make sure you get there in good time. Each venue has its own website, so look up the transport advice including bus and train services, shuttle buses from local hotels and stations, car parking facilities, etc.&lt;br /&gt;· Pre-register for the show so that you are sent a badge, which will avoid the need to queue on arrival. You may also receive pre-show bulletins to advise you of show highlights and activities.&lt;br /&gt;· Visit the show's website and read the show previews in the trade media to find out who is exhibiting so that you can make a list of ‘must visit’ stands and plot these out on the floorplan.&lt;br /&gt;Devote enough time. An exhibition gives you the opportunity of speaking face-to-face with many exhibiting experts in one day, a task that would otherwise take several days. So allow enough time to take advantage of the opportunity.&lt;br /&gt;Take plenty of business cards, but give them out carefully. You don’t want to waste your time, and exhibitor’s time, with unnecessary follow up activity.&lt;br /&gt;Take a pen and pad to write down useful information, telephone number, etc, etc. Sounds basic I know, but you would be surprised how many exhibition visitors I see patting their empty pockets looking for pens and business cards.&lt;br /&gt;Talk to exhibitors. Don’t be shy, they are there to share their knowledge and information with you and to offer advice.&lt;br /&gt;Plan in some time to network with other visitors too. Your customers and other business colleagues may be visiting the show, so arrange to meet. You can gain a lot of business intelligence in a face-to-face situation that you will never hear on the phone or read in an e-mail.&lt;br /&gt;If there is a seminar programme, look at the timetable and select the modules that would be of most interest to you. Again, you can freely gather professional advice that it would otherwise with take time or money to obtain. The pen and notepad may come in useful here too.&lt;br /&gt;Consider how you will deal with brochures and samples. Taking a small suitcase on wheels is an option.&lt;br /&gt;Take a break. Visiting an exhibition is hard work. It’s often a hot and draining atmosphere and there can be a lot of new information to digest. To remain alert and to take stock of your achievements so far, and goals for the day, take a break to have a drink and refuel with some food.&lt;br /&gt;Plan for the unexpected too. Don’t walk around in a blinkered state, just seeking out your pre-conceived targets. Furthermore, the trend is only expected to continue, with spending on nontraditional media eventually comprising 26.6% of all U.S. advertising and marketing dollars by 2012, the firm concludes.           &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The trend is good news for the ad specialty market, as promotional products will increasingly be used for such promotional efforts as brand marketing, sales conferences and giveaway packages. In fact, one industry member, Jo-an Lantz of Geiger (asi/202900), says she's already noticed a surge in clients' demands for promotional products beginning in 2006. "We are seeing a shift, essentially an increase in spending from media buyers and agencies," the Geiger executive VP says. "These buyers who were making significant purchasing decisions with tradition forms of advertising — TV, radio and print publications — are pouring dollars into web, video and mobile advertising and they are using promotional products to drive viewers to their sites."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At JB of Florida (asi/232281), an Adventures in Advertising (asi/109480) affiliate, owner Wayne Greenberg says his company has experienced the same effect and he offers two reasons why.&lt;br /&gt;The first, Greenberg says, has to do with the current state of the economy. During hard times, consumers are more likely to focus on marketing channels that promise more bang for the buck. Add to that the education component, as distributors nowadays are becoming more savvy at helping their customers create informed buying decisions, and the result is a growth in ad specialty revenue, he says.As an example, Greenberg recounts a campaign his company recently undertook. Instead of opting for a TV or paper ad, a large credit union in the Sunshine State approached the distributorship looking for a more creative item to give away at their seafood festival. "They decided to go with crab hats with their name on it," Greenberg says. "It's nontraditional for a credit union to go out and do something a little bit crazy, but it sure put their name on the lips of not only those who wore the hats, but those who saw it as well." As of yesterday, the former Top 40 distributor has ceased operations, laid off all of its employees except for a very small transition team, and has begun the process of liquidating its assets. Ultimately, CorpLogoWare was forced to succumb to a mountain of debt that included $13 million to Comerica Bank (one of its lenders), more than $8 million to Banyan Mezzanine Fund (another lender), and about $5 million to industry suppliers. These numbers were shared with employees yesterday afternoon during a conference call run by CorpLogoWare CFO Bob Evers.&lt;br /&gt;"We announced a shutdown this morning," said Evers during the conference call. "The bank has put us in default so we're actively starting to liquidate the company today. For now, this isn't a bankruptcy situation and hopefully our creditors won't take legal action against the company."As of March 17, Comerica Bank put the liquidating effort into the hands of Evers and a small transition team that was focused on collecting on accounts receivables and any other assets that CorpLogoWare had. To collect its assets, Evers told employees that they'd have to go so far as to send all of their computer equipment and any other electronics owned by CorpLogoWare back to the company. And, Evers said, the bank would not be paying employees for any untaken vacation time and for commissions that salespeople believe they're still owed. He also said that the bank would have to evaluate its position with any vendors in the market.&lt;br /&gt;"The bank has a lot of leeway in this situation because they're owed a lot of money and we can't pay them back for our loans," Evers said on the call. "They own all of our assets now and they're trying to recoup as much money as they can. So, they're not really going to be in a position to write checks to anybody right now. Here is the copy of it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;CorpLogoWare's Levine Details Financial Woes; Vows to Leave Company Once Deal Is InkedAs first reported in a Breaking News alert on Wednesday, Top 40 distributor CorpLogoWare (asi/168827) has been dealing with major financial problems over the past few months. As of this morning, the company reportedly was working to close a deal to be acquired by another industry firm, as employees are leaving the distributor organization and suppliers are reporting debts that reach into the millions.&lt;br /&gt;Jack Levine, the president and CEO of CorpLogoWare, who says he would no longer be with the company after the close of the deal being negotiated, now admits to growing the company too fast and taking on too much overhead. "I pressed too far too fast, and I'm to blame for that," he told Counselor in an exclusive interview over the weekend. "We weren't operating efficiently, and I stressed the financial side of the business way too much."&lt;br /&gt;Levine says that a few efforts to grow his company actually ended up hurting. First, he points to the overly aggressive hiring of account executives and being too free with cash advances on commissions in an effort to get reps ramped up quickly. As of last week, before some salespeople began defecting, the company had 130 account executives, and Levine says, "We probably went through double that amount before we found the ones we really wanted. It was a very expensive undertaking."&lt;br /&gt;Other efforts that hurt the financial side of CorpLogoWare, Levine says, included some strategic errors with some acquisitions as well as large investments in corporate programs that took too long to become profitable. "It just became too much financial stress," says Levine, who claims to have invested more than $3 million of his own money into the company.&lt;br /&gt;Meanwhile, Counselor has learned that this isn't the first time that Levine has headed up a company with financial troubles. After filing for personal bankruptcy in 1987, Levine became president of a public company named Ciro. He was president of the fashion jewelry company in the early 1990s, when the SEC accused the company's management of filing false quarterly and annual reports. The SEC charged at the time that Levine used phony franchise fees and fictitious sales reports to turn losses into profits. Court papers charge that Ciro reported a profit of $1.2 million in 1991, when the company actually lost $2.4 million. Ultimately, Levine signed a settlement with the SEC in which he paid a $50,000 fine, agreed to never become a director or officer of a public company, but did not admit or deny guilt of the charges.&lt;br /&gt;"Along with the owner of the company, I did not act honorably," Levine says. "He put money into the company as licensing fees to cover up the fact that the business was not doing well, and I as president helped him do it."&lt;br /&gt;Levine left Ciro in April 1993 and started work on his next venture, in which he was a founder of online lending company Mortgage.com. When the company had an IPO in 1999, Levine's status with the firm was changed to "shadow director," as the SEC had barred him from being an officer of a public company. Mortgage.com ended up going out of business in late 2000, and the company's creditors ultimately won a court settlement from Mortgage.com for $4.68 million. Of that, Levine was ordered to pay a share of $400,000, as creditors charged that he and others received money from an investor as a stock buyout when the money was meant for Mortgage.com operations.&lt;br /&gt;Levine says there was no truth to the accusations in that court case. "We operated Mortgage.com in a totally ethical and honest fashion," he says, "even though it fell victim to the dot-com bust."&lt;br /&gt;And now, he has overseen financial issues at CorpLogoWare that he attributes to his own mismanagement. "I wanted CorpLogoWare to be as successful as it should have been if I had been managing it well," he says. "Now, the impact of what I did to ensure that has resulted in the exact opposite of what I was trying to accomplish. And I hurt the very people I was trying to protect. I take full responsibility for everything that went wrong with CorpLogoWare."&lt;br /&gt;And what went wrong has led to suppliers saying they're left holding bills totaling in the millions of dollars. "We've been going back and forth with CorpLogoWare for at least four months, having been assured that they would pay us," says the principal of one Top 40 supplier, who reports being owed "in the neighborhood of six-figures. At this point, I'd be surprised to get any of it back."&lt;br /&gt;Meanwhile, employees and salespeople of the company are defecting, saying that the company's financial situation has made it impossible to do their jobs and fulfill orders for clients. One regional manager, who is still with the company, says that the financial problems have been going on for about six months, and that the company has been on credit hold with suppliers for a while. "They haven't told us much throughout this whole mess," says the salesperson. "They said that the bank has frozen our funds. I just don't understand where all the money has gone. We bring in a lot of revenue at good margins, but then we don't have any money to pay vendors? I'm devastated by this. Somebody I trusted ended up screwing me."&lt;br /&gt;Other salespeople at the company have already begun to find alternate places of employment. Counselor has learned that at least 25 out of CorpLogoWare's top account executives have signed up with Proforma (asi/300094) within the past couple of weeks.&lt;br /&gt;CorpLogoWare, which Levine founded in 2002, ranks number 32 on Counselor's Top 40, with $42 million in reported ad specialty sales in 2006.
